What medical screenings do I need and when?

Staying healthy at any age is important. Ask your primary care physician what medical screenings make sense for you. Common medical conditions we should screen for, and when, are:

  • Hypertension: Age 18
  • Hyperlipidemia: Age 20
  • Diabetes: Anyone with hypertension or hyperlipidemia, or anyone overweight or obese
  • Osteoporosis: Women age 65, Men age 70

The most common cancers we should screen for are colon (start screening at age 50), breast (start screening at age 40), and cervical (start screening at age 21). In addition to getting regular screenings, there are other ways to take charge of your health:

  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Be physically active
  • Avoid tobacco
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Protect against STDs
